About Operations

Operations encompasses those functions central to the planning, running and performance analysis of the train service.

These Include:

  • Timetable planning and preparation
  • Resource allocation (diagramming and rostering of train sets and train crew)
  • Real time monitoring and management of the train service (through Control offices)
  • Subsequent analysis of performance, including attribution of any delays to root cause

Closely associated with these activities is maintaining the availability, quality and competence of those engaged in tasks which often require specialist and highly developed skills and which are in many cases safety critical. Indeed, the safety and security of the railway - in respect of both passengers and staff - and how this can be maintained and enhanced, remains a theme which both underpins and overlays the entirety of Operations.

In short, Operations can perhaps best be described as the delivery of the rail industry's core product, i.e. the safe, efficient and reliable running of trains.
