Rail operators on hand to help stranded air passengers

05/05/2010

Train companies are gearing up to deal with extra passengers following the closure of several airports in Scotland because of the volcanic ash cloud.

  • Virgin Trains is today adding extra carriages to a number of services from Birmingham to Scotland and an additional train from Preston to Glasgow. The extra carriages are the equivalent of around 1,400 additional seats.
  • ScotRail is adding carriages to trains between Stranraer (where there is a ferry port connection) and Kilmarnock/Glasgow Central.
  • East Coast is easing its ticketing policy to help customers affected by delays to flights to and from affected Scottish airports.
  • Other train companies are keeping the situation under review.

A spokesperson for the Association of Train Operating Companies said: “It’s frustrating for people to have their plans disrupted in this way. Once again train companies are gearing up to help stranded air passengers get to their destination as quickly and easily as possible.

“Extra carriages are being added to trains where possible and where required. Other operators are keeping the situation under review and remain on standby to step in if needs be.”
