ATOC responds to report into cable theft
26/01/2012In response to the publication of the Transport Select Committee's report into cable theft, Michael Roberts, Chief Executive of the Association of Train Operating Companies, said:
“Cable theft regularly causes disruption for thousands of passengers and costs the taxpayer millions, so it is good news that the government is planning new laws to crack down on illegal scrap metal dealing.
“ATOC estimates that as a result of cable theft, around 3.8million passenger journeys were delayed or cancelled and a further 500,000 journeys were not taken last year. Train companies are working tirelessly with the rest of the industry to tackle the problem, and will continue to call for tougher measures to allow police to close down rogue traders for good.
"We are always looking at how we can improve services for passengers, and we will look at the Committee’s recommendations carefully.”
